Hiking vacation along the Amalfi coast and Bay of Neaples, Italy 2011

A compilation of photographs from a selection of hiking trails.

Captured by Kenneth Lundkvist in 2011                                                                                                            Åter till hemsidan...

On the bus from the airport to the hotel, we had a first glimpse
of Vesuvius at a distance....
...as well as a first view of our residential site for one week, Sorrento.

On the first day, an expectant group has gathered
at the railway station...
...for further transportation by rail and cable car,
up to a view over Naples.

Hiking on stony trails.... ...to see coastal views... ...and a hilly landscape clad in green.

Part of the trail, through dense forest foliage... ...with findings of miniature cyclamen plants,
brightly glowing on the forest floor.
A group of wild(?) dogs followed the group, hoping for a treat from our lunch pack.

After the day's hike in cool weather, the warm and cosy fireside
was a welcome refuge.
At the end of the day, relaxing in the sunshine... ...with a stunning view of Golfo di Napoli.

Getting ready for another day of hiking... ...with island of Capri in the background.

Looking down... ... at steep, rocky slope... ...with an abandoned stone quarry at sea level.

Ascending to a chapel at the top of a hill... ...with the group following the guide.

At the top you may enjoy the full panorama... of the coast, and enjoy... ...the sense of height above sea level.

Starting the descent... ...along a trail towards... ...a village at sea level.

A view back towards the chapel on the hilltop. A hikers reward... ...in a shaded and comfortable environment.

Next day, ascending the final 200 meters... ...towards the top of Vesuvius. Petrified lava flow from the latest eruption.

A first view of Napels from Vesuvius. A look into the crater, 650 meters wide and 230 meters deep. Impressive!

A small pioneering group takes the path all the way to the top... ...walking the narrow ridge of the crater... ...to have a top view of the crater.

The stunning view over bay of Napels from the crater top!

Here the group descends into the crater... ...to investigate the active fumaroles - cracks in the ground, emitting
water vapour and gases from the active core of the volcano.

Beginning the descent from the top of Vesuvius... ...with a view towards the ruin city of Pompeji.

Before leaving Vesuvius, there was time for lunch... ...and resting while taking in the coastal view... ...as well as looking back at the top ridge in background, where the
pioneering group was climbing.

Starting the final descent... ...sometimes sliding down steep slopes... ...in slalom-style ("tyngden på dalskidan").

Approaching the ruins of Pompeji. Entering the ruin city... ...and one of the amfitheatres.

A pedestrian crossing... ...with traces of wheel tracks in the stone. One of the streets with house ruins on both sides.

The mighty volcano towering over the ruins of Pompeji... ...and some of the volcano's victims... ...caught unaware in the ash rain and the pyroclastic flow of hot gases.

A visit to the Pompeji Forum bath house... ...and the local bakery... ...before leaving the ruin city and its neighbouring volcano.

This evening, one of us is celebrating her XXth birthday... ...with a complimentary cake from the restaurant... ...all surrounded by happy family.

This day is free for looking at the sights... ...around Sorrento... ...for shopping, if you like (perhaps buying a car?)...

...looking at street life... ...doing some window shopping... ...perhahps for some colorful souvenirs...

...or wooden toys... ...maybe some ceramics... ..or just sampling a plate of mozzarella e accessori?

Or, why not make the day complete by taking the elevator... ...from the hotel, down to sea level...

...dive into the Mediterranean water... ...or simply grab a deck chair and R E L A X !

Next day, a walk through Sorrento, down to... ...the windy harbour... ...where a ship awaits to bring us to the isle of Capri.

A short bus ride from the harbour brings us to... ...visit the villa of Axel Munthe... ...and a tour through its grand interior.

In the villa, artificial birds... ...real flowers... ...and statues overlooking...

...the Capri harbour... ...and the Capri villa town... ...with its narrow lanes.

As always, a good meal is included in the day's trip... ...as well as a local guide.

Next day, starting at low altitude on a hike to Positano town... ...up towards the mountain ridge... ...passing some residential settlements with a view!

Some houses are in good condition... ...and some are in need of a handyman. Looking for the perfect summer house? Look no further!

Suddenly the trail opens... ...with a stunning view. Walking on narrow trails.

At last, Positano town in sight... ...but we still have a long, long way to climp. It feels so good to have a rest!

Two happy guides enjoying the view. Now the trail slopes down towards Positano... ...but there is still hundreds of meters to descend.

Part of the group, waiting for the local bus... ...while the remaining group makes the final hundred meters by foot. A well deserved rest after a full day's hike.

Some pleasant sceneries... ...from Positano town... ...serves well the purpose to summarize a memorable vacation.

And finally, a few snapshots from 33 000 feet, above the Alps and City of Kalmar/The Öland Bridge.
